An emergency is an urgent event that calls for immediate action. Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere. The basic actions you take to prepare and protect yourself, your family and your home are extremely important. Responders may not be able to reach you immediately, so we encourage you to be prepared to protect you and your family for the first 72-hours of an emergency.

There are three steps to Emergency Preparedness 

 Know the Risks  Make a Plan  Get a Kit

Know the Risks

Understanding the risks that can affect the area we live in is the first step to being prepared along with knowing how to react when an emergency hits in order to reduce the affect on you and your family. Some risks of emergencies or disasters that are most likely to occur in our region include:  

• Flooding
• Wildfires
• Severe Winter Storms
• House Fires
• Hurricane/High Winds
• Power Outages
• Highway Accidents
• Dangerous Goods
• Extreme Heat
• Public Health Emergency

Make a Plan

Making a plan for the different types of emergencies will help you and your family be safe and is the second step to Emergency Preparedness. It's important to make sure that ALL family members are aware of the plan and that you take time to review it on an annual basis. Just like fire drills at school, testing your plan is important to ensure that everyone knows what to do should an emergency occur.  Click on  default Make an emergency plan_Template 2022.pdf (1.05 MB) for a printable plan.

Things to consider in your plan include:
• Do you have two routes to leave your home in the case of a fire?
• If everyone is in different locations when the emergency occurs (ie: work, school, gym) where will you meet and how will you connect with each other?
• Do you have a list of all the emergency contact phone numbers somewhere other then in your phone? Does everyone have a copy of the numbers somewhere such as in a purse, backpack or briefcase?
• Do you have an out-of-area or out-of-province relative or friend that you can give udates to?  
• Does anyone in your family know first aid and CPR?
• Did you include plans for pets?

Get a Kit

Preparing a kit helps to ensure that you and your family can be self-sufficient during the first 72-hours of any type of emergency.  

Think of the things that you and your family MUST take if it you were evacuated from your home? Would you remember all those things if you were told you had 30 minutes to evacuate? Use this as a starting point of what to prepare in your emergency kit.

Some items that you should ensure you have in your kit include:
• Water (recommended 2 litres per person per day)
• Non-perishable foods (canned meats, energy bars, canned fish, chocolate bars, etc.)
• Radio to hear emergency messages and warnings (hand-crank are better than battery)
• Flashlight (hand-crank are better than battery)
• Toilet Paper (in plastic bag to keep dry)
• Emergency contact numbers
• Toiletries (small amounts only)
• Cell Phone Charger
• Copies or prescriptions or extra medications
• Supplies for your pets
• Cash in small bills and a cheque book 
• Spare car/house keys
• Candle in a sturdy base 
• Garbage bags for sanitation and emergency raingear
• Water proof matches and lighter
• Sleeping Bags and Blankets
• First Aid supplies and handbook
• List of items that can’t be pre-packed should be stapled to the outside of the bag (e.g. wheelchair, hearing aid, eye glasses, sleep apnea machine, cell phones, etc.)
• Flash drive of important documents such as list of prescriptions, bank account and credit card numbers, insurance policies, photos of family members in case you are seperated, inventory and pictures of valuable household goods, medical information such as immunization records.

If you plan to do any other the following this permit is required.

  • Install a new service
  • Connect to existing water/sewer service
  • Driveway Installs or modifications
  • Culvert Work.

 If the new service is not located on a Municipal-owned road, an additional permit is required through the NS Public Works before the job can be scheduled. It will be filled out by the Municipality and an additional deposit will be required for this. 

  • Please Note: There will be No permits issued from  October 31- April 15th  due to the unpredictability of weather conditions and lifting of weight restrictions.

Tuesday, September 25, 2018 (Wentworth, NS) –
In July, the Councils of the Municipality of the District of West Hants and the Town of Windsor passed a motion to enter into negotiations with the Province to consolidate the two municipalities through special legislation. Stemming from the discussions that took place over the past two months, the Councils met with the Department of Municipal Affairs on September 24 and determined that, for the betterment and the sustainability of the region, consolidation of the two municipal units is the best way forward.

The Special legislation to consolidate the Municipality of the District of West Hants and the Town of Windsor was brought forward at the Legislature this morning beginning the process of creating a new regional municipality by April 1, 2020. The legislation consists of transitional matters including the appointment of a transition coordinator and the creation of a transition committee who will oversee the process.

Councils of the Municipality and the Town remain adamant that citizen engagement and communication be at the forefront throughout this process and are looking forward to working with the citizens in both municipal units to build a new, stronger regional government.

The Councils of the Municipality and the Town of Windsor met with staff from the Department of Municipal Affairs on August 29 to discuss and review their request to the Minister of Municipal Affairs for Special Legislation to consolidate our communities.

The Councils agreed that the Queens County amalgamation will be used as the model for our region and after a successful evening of discussion and debate agreed to the following statements:
• Our Councils are committed to moving forward together to create a new regional government for a stronger community.
• Our public will be engaged in a continuous and responsive way to inform our decision making.
• Coherent communication messages will be agreed to in a timely manner by all three parties, the two municipal units and the Province, before being made public.
• It will be made clear by the two municipal units what they can change or influence and what they cannot.
• No individual Councillor or municipal unit will speak on behalf of the group.
• Councils understand that all questions will not be able to be answered as of yet, but lack of details does not equal a lack of commitment.

Just a reminder to those who use our trails at Irishmans Road that they are shared use and a part of the land is leased by the Glooscap Heritage Archers Association. When using the trails (hiking, biking, archery, horseback riding, etc.), please be aware of other users; slow down and use caution around corners and hills to ensure everyone stays safe. 

Additionally, all users MUST stay on the official trail system that has been constructed. Absolutely no one is permitted to create new trails or technical trail features (such as jumps) without permission and direction from Municipal staff.
