Public Works Winter Operations uses in-house, along with contracted. With each weather event, crews are responsible for approximately 102.7 lane kilometers of streets and also clear about 30.6 kilometers of sidewalks.

Streets and sidewalks are prioritized based on several criteria, including:
1.) Emergency Services (i.e. Police, Fire, Emergency Health Services)
2.) High Volume Traffic Areas
3.) Business Core & Industry
4.) Civic Facilities (School, Post Office, etc.)

Our Public Works staff work to ensure that our streets and sidewalks are clear and safe from snow and ice. However, in the region’s expansive geography, especially during periods of heavy snowfall or other extreme weather conditions, please have patience as it can take longer. After a snowfall, crews are often hampered by cars parked on the streets, which block access for snow clearing equipment. This creates time delays and can be hazardous.

Winter Bylaw Infractions to be aware of:

Section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act, no person shall willfully park or leave standing a vehicle, attended or unattended, on a street or part thereof which interferes or obstructs snow removal during or after a snow storm, or in any way obstructs winter maintenance, i.e. salting. Vehicles will be towed away at the owner’s expense.

Section 318 of the Municipal Government Act, snow is not to be moved across any streets or placed onto any street or public sidewalks. Snow shall be stored on the property being cleared or hauled away and dumped in an approved location.

Our Operators are out to make our roads & sidewalks safe. Your cooperation and patience regarding snow removal is encouraged and much appreciated by the Municipality.
