What is it?

Strategic planning determines exactly where an organization is going and how it's going to get there. Ultimately, strategic planning identifies Council's Vision, Mission, Values, Strategic Areas of Focus and the specific strategies that define how Council and Administration will respond to the needs and goals of the Municipality.

Why Is It Important?

Strategic planning will result in a plan that will set the Municipality’s direction for the future. It’s a roadmap on what the future could look like in terms of services, projects and sustainability and will provide a means to measure the progress of the Municipality in achieving these goals.

How Does this work?

The Municipality has hired a consulting firm to help acquire information needed to create the plan. Residents and business/community stakeholders have an opportunity through surveys and consultation sessions to provide feedback and direction on where you’d like to see West Hants in the future.

How can I participate?

  1. Fill out the on-line survey - https://goo.gl/forms/azLxPOO0At0xRlDu2
  2. Surveys can also be picked up at any of the following locations, completed and returned to the Municipal Office. (Isabel & Roy Jodrey Memorial Library, Hantsport, Windsor Library, Windsor Town Office)
  3. Business and Community Stakeholders can attend the session being held at the Three Mile Plains Community Hall on September 7th at 6p.m.
  4. As a resident, you can attend the public consultation being held at the Brooklyn Civic Center on September 14th beginning at 6p.m.

If you have any questions please contact Communications Coordinator, Chrystal Remme at 902-798-6931 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Thank you for taking the time to help us make West Hants the Best of Everything!

We are so fortunate to have these great recreation sites, parks and open spaces in our region where we can connect and enjoy nature.

The Region covers 124,200 hectares of land. Within it, the Avon River empties into the Minas Basin, where the world’s highest tides rise and fall along 160 kilometers of shoreline and the banks of tidal rivers. Thirty kilometers of dykes protect 2,436 hectares of land. A variety of lakes and rivers provide opportunities for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and boating.

There are two Provincial Parks (Smileys and Falls Lake), two Park Reserves (Cheverie Salt Marsh and St. Croix), wilderness areas, 12% protected lands (as identified by Environment NS,) and Crown land within the Region.

The Region currently owns and/or manage 73 parcels of parks and open space land, totalling 492.5 acres. Forty-three of these parcels are used for recreational purposes, and, currently, twenty-one sites have been developed and are maintained as recreation sites.

Irishmans Road Recreation Site

Irishmans Road Recreation Site is located at 151 Irishmans Road and is home to the Glooscap Heritage Archers Association (GHAA) and the Ryan Lahey Memorial (Soccer) Fields. The Irishmans Road Recreation Site has very distinctive landscape features with high gypsum content and, as such, it is dominated by Karst topography and easy to distinguish sinkholes. This site boasts a beautiful and extensive shared use trail network with a mix of single-track and double track. These trails are still being expanded upon and will eventually offer approximately 12-15 km of beginner to advanced trail loops.

Cheverie Salt Marsh Restoration Trail

The Cheverie Salt Marsh Trail was built by volunteers of the Cheverie Crossway Salt Marsh Society. The 1 km trail (2 km return) offers stunning views of the salt marsh as it winds through the adjacent woods. Interpretation signs provide information about the history of salt marshes and their importance.

Kempt Quarry Recreation Site

The Kempt Quarry Recreation Site is marked with a sign on highway 215 in Kempt Shore. While you are down the Shore, be sure to visit the Cheverie Salt Marsh Trail as well.

The trail was constructed in 2008 as a health and heritage walking trail that meandered around the perimeter of the property.
Construction of the trail was done by “pioneer methods”, volunteer hand labor by members of the community using shovels, rakes, and wheelbarrows with no powered machinery except the trucks that delivered the gravel and sand to the site.
In addition to the 1760 meter long walking trail, several exercise stations are installed with signage instructing users on stretching and strength exercises that can be done to improve their flexibility and endurance.
