Welcome to the West Hants Regional Municipality’s Emergency Management & Protective Services page.
Emergency management is the managerial function charged with creating the framework within which communities reduce vulnerability to hazards and cope with disasters.
Emergency management seeks to promote safer, less vulnerable communities with the capacity to cope with hazards and disasters.
The ultimate purpose of emergency management is to save lives, preserve the environment, and protect property and the economy. The protection of life is of paramount importance.

West Hants Regional Municipality is very fortunate to have a highly dedicated group of volunteers. They commit their time and expertise to helping those in our communities during what is usually a very trying and emotional time (fires, medical, motor vehicle accidents, wildland fires, etc). This said, if you ever ask any one of them, they will also tell you there are success stories and rewarding moments as well…one of the reasons they continue to choose to be here for every one of us.
If you ever want to learn more, tour a fire station, see the fire trucks, or fill out an application to become a member, click on the links below.

There have been several plans developed over the past number of years that help guide the work our team does.
The Avon Region Active Transportation Plan was designed to improve options for safe and convenient non-motorized transportation across the Avon Region.
The Parks and Open Spaces Plan was developed to direct the management of our recreational spaces such as operations, maintenance, acquisition, divestment, funding, programming, and education.
The Active Living Strategy was created to develop an action plan to get people moving and outlines the steps to be taken to provide communities and residents with the opportunities and knowledge needed to participate in more physical activities more often.
The West Hants Trails Plan was created to inventory eighteen trail sites across the Municipality and included ideas for how West Hants could invest and develop these sites in order to ensure maximum use and community benefit. View or download the document here.
