The Municipality of the District of West Hants often acquires services and construction from private companies (contractors/constructors). All contractors/constructors should be aware of the following information and requirements that may apply to them when providing goods, services or construction to the Municipality.
The Health and Safety Policy,
(84 KB), confirms the Municipality is committed to providing a healthy and safe work environment for its employees and preventing occupational illness and injury. The Policy requires the Chief Administrative Officer to implement policies and practices to achieve this mandate.
Contractors and constructors are not employees. That’s why the Contractor Safety Policy, ADOH-006.00, was developed and applies to contractors/constructor providing a service (including the service of construction) on Municipal work sites. A contractor/constructor must provide a certificate or letter from an approved Occupational Health and Safety Organization, and be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Nova Scotia. Please review the policy links above for specific requirements.
The Workers’ Compensation Act of Nova Scotia, states that employers and workers of various industries and trades, as set by regulation, are subject to the Workers Compensation Act.
As part of our procurement practice, the Municipality of West Hants requires that all contractors/constructors providing services and construction at Municipal work sites provide a Workers’ Compensation Board Clearance Letter, confirming they are in compliance with the Act, prior to starting the service or construction. If your company is not required under the Workers’ Compensation Act to comply with the Act, this information must also be submitted to the Municipality to ensure the Municipality complies on your behalf as required.
Depending on the nature of the services being provided, some non-mandated industries and trades may also be requested to provide WCB Clearance Letter. If you are unsure if your company or business will require a WCB Clearance Letter please contact the Workers Compensation Board at 1-800-870-3331.
The Municipality of West Hants may require proof of liability insurance in the minimum amount of $2 Million or $5 Million depending on the service or construction being provided. The liability insurance should list the Municipality as additionally insured.
